Mockroot arrive avec Gabriel en mode “vous connaissez Tigran… mais pas vraiment”. L’idée est claire : proposer un album qu’il connaît par cœur, un peu vitrine du côté “djent jazz” du bonhomme, en prévenant direct que ce ne sera pas une écoute facile, mais qu’il y a des gros moments, surtout sur la fin. Les retours suivent assez bien cette promesse. Gabriel est très client (4,5/5), en parlant d’un album dense, avec une vraie direction et un côté plus “violent” que le reste. Nicolas accroche aussi, mais surtout sur l’aspect technique : batterie, mises en place, tout le délire rythmique un peu costaud. De l’autre côté, Matthieu met 3,5/5 mais avec ses réserves habituelles : il aime bien, mais trouve ça un peu répétitif et a du mal à vraiment distinguer les morceaux, même s’il sauve Double Faced. Adrien résume bien le ressenti global : il reconnaît de très beaux passages, mais parle d’un album “ultra cérébral”, pas forcément évident à apprivoiser. Au final, Mockroot fait consensus sur un point : c’est fort. Mais c’est typiquement le genre d’album que tu respectes énormément sans forcément y revenir tout le temps.

Proposé par Nico, en mode valeur sûre directe, “un classique que vous connaissez probablement déjà par cœur” avec un gros focus sur la prod qu’il adore, et un attachement perso assez évident. Le groupe suit assez naturellement. Adrien valide tout de suite le choix, “tellement bon choix” et monte même très haut avec un 5/5, en mettant en avant le pur côté trip-hop, notamment sur Man Next Door et sa batterie lente qui claque. Gabriel, lui, est globalement client aussi, surtout sur les évidences du disque, “Teardrop, classique imparable” mais reste un peu plus nuancé sur certains morceaux, notamment au niveau des voix, qui ne passent pas toujours selon les titres. Matthieu a un ressenti assez intéressant et très “lui”, “j’adore, j’ai juste un peu de mal à vouloir y revenir” ce qui résume assez bien le paradoxe de l’album dans le groupe. Raphaël, de son côté, redécouvre un peu le disque, “j’avais jamais écouté à fond… ou alors jamais à jeun” mais reste plus mesuré sur l’impact global, malgré le respect évident pour l’album. Au final, Mezzanine ressort comme un gros classique incontestable. Tout le monde reconnaît la qualité, l’ambiance et la prod, mais avec ce petit twist intéressant c’est un album que tout le monde aime bien… sans que ce soit forcément celui vers lequel on revient naturellement.

Proposé par Adrien, qui le présente sans trembler comme son meilleur album post–Led Zeppelin, au point de le comparer directement aux I–IV (rien que ça). On est clairement sur un choix “album de cœur”, pas une découverte random. Globalement, le groupe suit plutôt bien. Gabriel valide direct (“très très bon”), et Matthieu part sur un gros kiff malgré quelques morceaux en dessous avec une vraie hésitation sur les highlights (The Enchanter, Takamba, Tin Pan Alley), ce qui montre que l’album a quand même pas mal de matière solide. Y a aussi un petit moment de nerd musical autour de la métrique de Takamba (évidemment), preuve que l’album a ce côté un peu technique / inhabituel qui accroche. Côté notes, on est sur du 3,5 → 4/5, avec Raphael qui pointe une faiblesse sur la fin (“ça s’éternise”), mais qui finit quand même par remonter la note, signe que l’ensemble reste très solide.

Proposé (et un peu défendu) par Adrien, Tommy arrive comme le classique un peu intimidant du lot, l’album “important”, celui qu’on est censé respecter… mais pas forcément aimer. Et ça se ressent direct dans les retours. Gabriel reconnaît le côté culte et l’ambition, mais reste globalement à distance, impression que ça fait beaucoup pour pas toujours assez de payoff. Raphaël est dans la même vibe: respect pour le projet, mais écoute pas forcément agréable du début à la fin. C’est surtout Matthieu (Poussin) qui résume bien le ressenti général: y a des moments forts, des idées marquantes, mais aussi pas mal de longueurs et de passages où ça décroche. L’aspect opéra rock joue à la fois en faveur (cohérence, ambition) et contre (lourdeur, répétition). Nicolas, de son côté, reste plutôt en retrait mais s’aligne globalement sur cette lecture: intéressant à écouter une fois, mais pas un truc vers lequel on revient naturellement. Côté notes, on est sur du correct sans enthousiasme, un album respecté plus qu’aimé, où l’idée dépasse un peu l’exécution pour le groupe. En résumé: une œuvre importante… mais pas forcément une bonne expérience d’écoute en 2020+ sans un peu de patience.

Le choix de Fragile arrive dans une logique de “gros classique qu’on a peut-être raté”, et c’est exactement comme ça que Matthieu le présente. Pas un coup de cœur perso à la base, mais plutôt un devoir de culture musicale. Gabriel arrive avec une certaine avance, connaissant déjà les morceaux clés. Il parle direct de Roundabout et Heart of the Sunrise, et lâche un “Bill Bruford à la batterie… ce génie”, ce qui donne déjà un angle très “musiciens” à la discussion . Ensuite, à l’écoute, Matthieu est impressionné par “l’inventivité dans les riffs, les arpèges, les rythmes, et surtout les harmonies” . Il insiste sur le côté ultra travaillé, presque cérébral, mais cohérent. Adrien est un peu plus mesuré : “un prog un peu daté mais ça reste très bon” , avec un solide 3,9/5. Matthieu, lui, est carrément conquis et parle de “morceaux hallucinants” avec une préférence pour South Side of the Sky . Au final, un album largement validé, respecté par tous, avec un vrai plaisir d’écoute… même si certains sentent un léger décalage avec aujourd’hui.

Proposé par Adrien, avec un gros contexte dès le départ : collaboration avec le quartet de Donny McCaslin, album enregistré en pleine maladie, et surtout cette idée que c’est “vraiment son meilleur album”, avec une vraie préférence pour la voix plus fragile de fin de carrière. Très vite, Raphael pose le ton avec une des réactions les plus marquantes du groupe : “Quand j’écoute ce disque, j’ai vraiment la sensation que David Bowie chante en me regardant droit dans les yeux depuis les limbes.” Et il confirme ensuite sans surprise avec un 5/5 direct, “Hall of fame”, en disant même que Lazarus le fait chialer à chaque fois. Mais derrière, c’est beaucoup plus partagé. Gabi est globalement positif (3,5/5), surtout pour les musiciens (“sacrés musiciens”) et certains moments forts (Sue pour la batterie, Lazarus qui “fait mal”), mais pointe un vrai problème de cohésion : “ça fait un peu trop musiciens d’un côté et le chant de l’autre” Matthieu, lui, décroche clairement (2/5) : “j’ai pas réussi à rentrer dedans”. Il sauve la voix et Lazarus, mais critique assez frontalement les mélodies, les effets, et même la voix par moments. Nico est entre les deux (≈3/5), avec une réaction plus mesurée, pas rejet, mais pas non plus un énorme déclic immédiat. Au final, Blackstar est typiquement un album qui marque tout le monde, mais pas de la même façon : entre ceux qui vivent une vraie claque émotionnelle (Rafiki) et ceux qui restent plus à distance, impressionnés mais pas totalement embarqués. Un disque respecté par tous… mais aimé très différemment.

Proposé par Adrien comme un vrai album de chevet, avec tout le contexte qui va avec : dernier Genesis avec Peter Gabriel, concept assez perché, et surtout un gros morceau à digérer. Il annonce la couleur direct : c’est long, dense, mais pour lui c’est la quintessence du prog. Gabi est bien client (4/5), notamment pour la voix de Peter Gabriel, la section rythmique hyper solide et certains morceaux qu’il trouve encore très modernes (Back in NYC, Broadway). Matthieu est plus partagé (3,5/5) : il y a de très beaux moments (Carpet Crawlers ressort bien), mais aussi pas mal de passages plus longs, avec ce côté “comédie musicale” qui ne passe pas toujours. Nico reste plus en retrait, appréciant globalement sans que ça devienne un gros coup de cœur. Au final, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway ressort comme un classique respecté : ambitieux, riche, parfois brillant, mais aussi exigeant et un peu inégal, typiquement le genre d’album où ton avis peut évoluer avec le temps.

Proposé par Matthieu, mais avec Raphaël en soutien très appuyé, déjà prêt à le vendre comme “mon album de blues Rock préféré ever” avant même l’écoute collective. Le contexte compte, parce que Jeff Beck arrivait avec une image un peu “guitar hero” dans le groupe, pas forcément rassurante pour tout le monde. Et justement, Loud Hailer fait tomber pas mal d’a priori. Raphaël est le plus conquis. Il s’emballe très vite, parle de “Textes engagés, chanteuse enragée, guitare déchaînée... ce disque est Ouf !!!!!”, met 4,5/5, avec juste “-0,5 pour le coup du demi ton”. Son morceau choisi, “Pull It”, pour “ce son de gratte juste historique”, dit bien qu’il adore aussi les moments les plus excessifs du disque. Matthieu est plus nuancé, mais clairement surpris dans le bon sens. Il dit que ça “ressemble en rien à l’idée” qu’il avait de Beck, trouve l’ensemble “très énergique” et aime surtout entendre de “vrais morceaux”, pas juste des supports à solo. En revanche, il bute sur certains choix. “Scared for the Children” aurait pu être un sommet avec son côté “Little Wing” revisité, mais “cette modulation..... il avait vraiment pas le droit 😖”. Même chose sur “Pull It”, adoré par Raphaël, mais que lui rejette franchement: “la compo en elle même n'a aucun intérêt”, “moi elle m'a surtout fait mal au crâne”. Son 3,5/5, c’est une vraie révision de jugement, sans conversion totale. Adrien partait lui aussi avec un gros biais, mais différent. En amoureux de Robert Johnson, Howlin’ Wolf et du blues plus brut, plus “sur le feeling et l’histoire qu’ils racontent que sur la technique”, l’album ne partait “pas gagnant”. Il pensait le noter sur 3. Puis il se fait rattraper par “le son”, par la construction des morceaux, et par la chanteuse “qui chante ET écrit bien”, au point de dire qu’elle permet à Beck d’être “un guitar anti hero”. Il finit par lâcher “Bon ok, c’est un putain de bon album!”. Il aime surtout le fait que le son moderne soit “au service de ces morceaux, et non l’inverse”, ce qu’il juge rare dans le style. Il cite “Pull It”, le “Little Wing revisited”, le premier morceau et sa ref à Gil Scott-Heron, puis choisit finalement “Shrine”, “doux, sensible, intime”. Verdict: 4/5. Gabriel valide encore autrement. Lui dit carrément qu’il n’aime “vraiment pas le blues”, et pourtant “cet album là je l’écoute sans soucis”. Ce qui le frappe, c’est à quel point ça “sonne tellement moderne”. Pour “un papi de 70+”, Beck est “toujours au taquet”, avec “un son énorme, un peu électro, un peu industrielle”, qui “met un sacré pèche dans les oreilles”. Il insiste aussi sur l’énergie de la voix. Lui aussi tique sur “Scared for the Children”, avec la vanne parfaite: “tu peux pas faire un solo guitar hero sans une modulation aller”. Il est un peu moins convaincu par la seconde moitié, “à part Shrine qui est effectivement très belle”, et trouve même qu’un morceau “fait tache dans l’album”, comme une “pièce rapportée”. Mais il reste franchement positif: 3,5/5, avec “Live in the Dark” en favori. Nico, enfin, rejoint très clairement le groupe sur la grosse faute de goût de l’album. Sa réaction à “Scared for the Children” est immédiate: “Oh bordel”, “Ça pue la faute de goût non ?”, au point que la modulation lui “a presque fait sursauter” pendant qu’il marchait, “pis bim dans ta face”. Il en remet même sur la mise en scène du moment, avec “une mesure de trou et un appel de cymbale moisi”. Pour le reste, il est plutôt positif sans être dithyrambique: “Pour l’instant je le trouve sympa”, “c’est un bon album de blues rock”, avec une vraie réserve sur la chanteuse, “J’aime pas trop la voix...”, même s’il nuance en disant qu’il faut peut-être juste qu’il s’y habitue. Au final, Loud Hailer convainc largement, mais pas de manière lisse. Raphaël prend une claque, Matthieu révise nettement son jugement, Adrien se fait retourner alors qu’il partait presque contre, Gabriel valide justement parce que l’album dépasse le blues pur, et Nico reconnaît un bon disque malgré ses réserves. Le consensus du groupe est assez clair: du gros son, de vraies chansons, une énergie moderne, et une énorme modulation interdite que personne n’a envie d’oublier.
